On Wednesday, 9th September, at Pentecost (Chemunaa), we asked a simple question: Who owns the story of marine pollution?
The answer: The community itself.
In partnership with Africa Centre for Nature-Based Climate Action , and supported by Pulitzer Center, Water Resources Commission, PADI AWARE Foundation and other partners, Greenstoration Ghana joined the Community Storytelling & Participatory Engagement for Cleaner Coasts campaign.
Theme: Empowering coastal communities to document, understand and take action against marine pollution, while strengthening local ownership of ocean conservation.
Fishers, women fish processors, youth, and elders came in their numbers. We didn't just talk about them, they documented their own reality.
They shared how plastics and marine pollution are affecting their catch, their health, and their livelihoods. They picked up cameras, they shared stories, they cleaned.
The turnout was massive - and the energy was even bigger.
Why this matters: Ghana's coast is under pressure. But solutions will not come from Accra alone. They must be co-created with coastal people who live with the problem daily.
This is just the beginning.
Next up: BEACH CLEAN-UP PARTY!
We are turning action into celebration. In the coming weeks, we will be hosting a community beach clean-up party at Chemunaa - music, storytelling, and collective action for cleaner coasts. Stay tuned for the date!
Thank you to Africa Centre for Nature-Based Climate Action for leading this, and to all partners and the people of Chemunaa for showing us what local ownership looks like.
